LOGISTICS LEXICON: DELIVERY EXCEPTION

A delivery exception occurs when some unexpected event causes a carrier to change the delivery date of a package or shipment. When this happens, an alert goes out to the customer, notifying them that their order has met with some unexpected delay. Here are some possible reasons that might cause a delivery exception to occur.

  • Inclement weather
  • Damaged items
  • No signature/recipient not available
  • Customs-related issues
  • Unreadable shipping addresses
  • Error in the delivery addresses
  • Federal holidays

Most of the time, a delivery exception only results in a minimal delay, and the delivery is completed on or shortly after the intended delivery date. In rare occasions, the package or shipment is returned to the shipper. Most often this is because the delivery address was unreadable, or the package was damaged in a way that made it impossible for the carrier to scan the label or barcode.

To avoid delays or exceptions, be sure to pack, seal, and label your packages correctly. Want more tips to make your shipments more efficient?
